Windsor Essex County has more natural beauty than visitors often realize! It’s not unusual to see beavers, herons, bald eagles, and snapping turtles in a single visit to a Point Pelee or Ojibway Park. Here are three ways you can enjoy and support Windsor and Essex County’s incredible wildlife this summer.

Donate to Wildlife Rehab Centres

Essex County has a number of endangered and threatened species, including the grey fox, spiny softshell turtle, and five-lined skink. We’re lucky to have committed professionals and volunteers to help protect important habitats and help animals who have been injured. Help ensure these species are around for people to appreciate in the future by donating to organizations like Wings Wildlife Centre, Erie Wildlife Rescue, and Windsor Essex County Humane Society.

Visit Parks and Conservation Areas

No matter where you live in Windsor Essex County, there is a conservation area or park around the corner. The Greenway stretches from each end of the county; you could walk almost the entire length of Essex County if you wanted to. Holiday Beach is a particularly great area to spot species like pelicans and bald eagles. Visit ERCA’s website to find a green space near you!

Join a Group or Club

If you’re new to the area or just want to learn more about our native species, we recommend joining a club! Windsor Essex County has no shortage of birding and naturalist clubs. These groups not only offer education, but a great opportunity to connect with other community members.

Make It Part of Your Summer Activities

Visiting local areas to experience  what the environment around Essex County has to offer can be a destination all its own, but it can also be part of a wider schedule of destinations to see around the area. Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island has some great itinerary ideas that let you fit an outdoor adventure in with visiting outstanding spots around the region. Local areas like Pelee Island also offer tours that include trips through parks and conservation areas alongside a full schedule of fun activities.

We hope you make the most of this summer and enjoy all the natural beauty Windsor Essex County has to offer!
