Windsor Essex County is lucky enough to land on Monarch Butterflies’ migration path to Central Mexico. Before these beauties arrive this fall, we're here to run you through the best spots to Monarchs in Windsor Essex County.

Point Pelee National Park

Point Pelee is the best spot to see a huge number of Monarch butterflies due to how the point extends into Lake Erie. Monarchs stop to rest before they take the long flight over the lake, congregating near the tops of trees. You can track the monarch sighting with this map to make sure you time your visit to the park right!

Via Italia Butterly Festival

This free festival happens near the end of August each year to align with the monarch migration – this year it lands on August 25th. Held in the Via Italia Heritage Garden, this is a great opportunity to learn about pollinator gardens and to see Monarchs up close! The butterfly release will happen between 12:30pm and 2:30pm.

Your Own Backyard

Monarch Butterflies love a lot of the native flowers in Windsor Essex County. Unfortunately, they aren’t as plentiful as they once were. Monarchs need a lot of fuel to fly to Mexico, so conservationists recommend you plant native species for them to feast on! Visit Point Pelee’s page about Monarchs for tips on how to grow a thriving pollinator garden.

The Monarch Migration is just one of the many natural wonders Windsor Essex County has to offer. Check out some of our other blogs to discover the rest!
