Summer may be done in Windsor Essex County, but fall is the perfect time to visit our area’s most interesting historical sites! Here are some of our favourites.

John R. Park Homestead

Ready to travel back in time to the 1850s? Stop by John R. Park Homestead Conservation Area. The home on the property was built in 1842 and has been restored to reflect that time period. Guests can explore the 1885 steam engine powered sawmill and the blacksmith’s shop. The Museum and Conservation Centre is open 11am-5pm Thursday through Sunday, but the grounds are open for walk throughs dawn to dusk each day.

Vin Villa

Vin Villa was Canada’s first commercial estate winery, founded in 1866 by Thaddeus Smith and partners. Today you can explore the ruins on Pelee Island by taking a tour with Pelee Island Adventures. This includes a wine tasting and a tour of their underground wine cellar.

Sandwich First Baptist Church

This historic church was built in 1851 ON Peter Street in Sandwich Town. It played an essential role in sheltering and assisting formerly enslaved people. Community members assisted in constructing Sandwich First Baptist, many making bricks using clay from the Detroit River and homemade kilns.
